Weeks 1 & 2

Our first 2 weeks of school have been so full, that this may be a long post.   Before we depart on our journey around the world, we first needed to learn about the world, maps, directions, the major religions of the world, and some science basics.  Of course, we also did the usual subjects: handwriting, math, spelling, creative writing, art, music, etc. but who wants to see a picture of that??

Our first interesting task, was to figure out why a globe is much more accurate than a map.  
Here's the "globe" and the "map".

Bookgirl said when she saw the tangerine "flat" it really helped her to understand why the northern and southern parts of the map are distorted.  Plus, the tangerine was quite tasty for snack time!

Our 2nd project was making a John 3:16 poster.  This was such a great project.  It really helped us all to start thinking about how much the world needs Jesus.  They really enjoyed choosing the people they were going to include and we had some great discussions about why people were dressed the way they were and some of the freedoms we have that they do not.  It's amazing to think that many of these people don't even have Bibles in their own languages.  How blessed we are to be born in the United States.  We hung it on the wall in our kitchen /school area as a reminder to pray.

Mathboy's first project for his curriculum was to make a clay pot.  In Bible times they stored scrolls in large clay pots, so he made a miniature version.  He also made a larger scroll with his handwriting sheets from the first two weeks.   I am impressed with how quickly he has picked up handwriting skills.

In our 2nd week we had two activities that were big hits with both Bookgirl and Mathboy.   We made Global paper dolls dressed like they were from various countries, and after learning map and directional skills we did a couple of treasure hunts outside complete with treasure, of course.  :)

Now it was Mathboys's turn to navigate a map and find the rest of the treasures!

Those were the highlights of our first two weeks.  For week 3 & 4 we will be focusing on the United States.    Bookgirl, Mathboy, and LittleSponge have all applied for their passports.  They even "drove" to the passport office in Miami and saw the agent in the office, who looked remarkably like Daddy but had an unusual Indian accent.  He told them they would receive their passports in 4-6 weeks...just in time for their trip to Mexico!
