Speaking of books, I have to recommend a read-aloud book that we just finished. Its called Teddy's Button. Its from Lamplighter Publishing's rare book collection. All of us loved it. Daddy had trouble reading parts of it out loud because it was so emotional. I just caught a sale at Vision Forum and ordered 2 more from this collection.
Mathboy started several things this week that he will continue all year. We put up a timeline on the wall from Creation to the 2nd coming. He will add figures to it all year. He also started a Bible Notebook that he will write in and illustrate. I'm sure I'll have pictures of some pages as the year progresses. We talked about original languages of the Bible. Here is a picture of Mathboy's version of the Greek Alphabet. As you can see, he did a great job recreating the characters.
Our first Canadian craft was a bust. We were trying to carve a bar of soap in the style of the Inuit carvings. Started out fine - we drew the bear on and started carving. Well, our bar of soap fell apart completely and we were left with this bear head! We put the head in the shower and they thought it was fun to wash with him.
For a science experiment:
They took 2 stalks of celery and pulled the Xylem that transports the water out of one stalk. We put them both in colored water and watched them for a day. You can see that without water, one got very droopy and gummy.
Our favorite activity during our stay in Canada was Maple Rolling. We of course couldn't do it with real snow, but it worked fine with crushed ice.
First you bring real maple syrup to 238F. Then you pour it on ice, and roll it up on a stick. It makes a maple taffy candy and it delicious.
Bookgirl wrote letters to 2 Canadian kids her age, so she's looking forward to getting letters back from them. One of them does all his school in French, so his mom said he will write part of his letter in French. Bookgirl thinks thats very neat.
Next we fly to Brazil for a 3 week stay in South America. Bênçãos! (Blessings!)

That maple taffy looks yummy! We LOVE maple syrup and will look forward to that portion of study on our own country . . . perhaps I should save it for a time when there's snow. Hmm! We have a bit of time still as we're doing Adventures.
What a great trip to Canada. Don't forget to stop in Daytona on your way to South America. We are looking forward to hearing all about you trips.
