The Beachball - Chapter 2

Chapter 2

The next day, a boy named Joseph picked the beach ball up. “Oh no,” thought the beach ball, “I’m going to be played with. I’ll never have adventures now.” Sure enough, Joseph threw the beach ball and yelled, “Catch!” The strange thing was the beach ball was never caught. He just went sailing through the air and landed in the sea with a SPLASH. “Goodbye land!” called the beach ball cheerfully, “Now I can have plenty of adventure.”

First, the beach ball had to get through all the people that were close to the shore. A woman with a baby saw him and picked him up, wondering who he belonged to. Not seeing a name, she said, “Since it doesn’t have a name on it, we’ll keep it. You can play with it, right Jamie?” she said, addressing the baby. “Ba-goo-ga,” the baby babbled, holding out her arms for the beach ball. The beach ball said to himself, “Now I will be a baby’s chew toy.” The mother, alarmed, threw the beach ball as far as she could. As he flew through the air, the beach ball told himself over and over, “Just don’t look down beach ball. Just don’t look down.”

When he landed, a young boy came up from swimming under the water right under the beach ball! The beach ball skidded a few feet on the water. Then waves carried him past people swimming, treading water, and floating in inner tubes. Again and again seagulls landed on him and examined him only to fly away again. Once a seagull pooped on him, but luckily for the beach ball it was washed off by a sudden surge of water covering him. While he was under water for a few brief seconds, he saw a school of fish swimming underneath him. He yelled, “Cool!” and got a mouth full of water in the process. When he surfaced, a seagull carried him off for a few yards, with the beach ball screaming all the while, “Put me down! Please, put me down!” Finally, the seagull dropped him.

When the beach ball looked around him, he saw only a man swimming. After drifting for a few hours, the beach ball looked behind him and saw only sparkling blue water. That’s when the beach ball realized: he was finally out at sea.
